Backflow recertification is not one schedule but several — the clock belongs to whoever issued your credential.
ASSE certifications, including the 5110 backflow tester, must be renewed every three years, and recertifying up to six months early loses no time.
A state licence can carry its own cycle — Texas's BPAT licence runs three years with 24 hours of continuing education — and many states and water utilities can set tester renewals of their own, often annual or biennial.
Recertification intervals
Ask how often backflow testers recertify and the answer starts with another question: which credential?
The renewal clock belongs to whoever issued what you hold, and a working tester can carry more than one kind — an industry certification, a state licence, a local program registration.
For who certifies testers in the first place and what first-time certification takes, our backflow tester certification guide covers that side of it.
The industry layer is the clearest.
ASSE certifications — the 5110 Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester among them — must be renewed every three years, and recertifying up to six months early loses no time on the cycle.
A state licence can carry its own calendar.
Texas's Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester (BPAT) licence, issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), is valid three years and needs 24 hours of continuing education to renew, 8 of them hands-on practical training.
The local layer can move faster than both.
Many states and water utilities can set their own renewal schedules for backflow testers — often annual or biennial — so the registration your water supplier recognizes can come due well inside a three-year certification window.
Which states issue their own tester credentials is its own question; our state-by-state backflow tester licence guide sorts them out.

Refresher course and retest
For ASSE 5110 testers, backflow recertification is an exam event, not a paperwork renewal — plan it like the first exam, not like a subscription.
5110 renewal means at least an 8-hour recertification class, passing a 50-question written exam and completing a hands-on practical exam.
The written exam is changing: ASSE updates it to 100 questions beginning January 1, 2027.
If your three-year window crosses that date, the exam you sit depends on which side of it your renewal lands — worth checking before you book.
Timing has some give: recertifying up to six months early loses no time on the cycle, so you can schedule the class and exams around your work instead of against a hard deadline.
What our research does not cover is what happens if a certification lapses or you do not pass a recertification component — those consequences sit with the certifying body or the state program, and you should ask them before a gap opens, not after.
Gauge calibration rules
A second clock runs alongside your renewal: the test gauge.
Annual test-gauge calibration is a common local rule our research could not confirm from a primary source, and our research found no federal calibration rule behind it.
Attribute the requirement to your water purveyor or local code authority, and get your cycle from them directly rather than from a national assumption.
Keep the two clocks separate.
Your recertification belongs to the certifying body or state program and renews you; the backflow test kit calibration requirement, where your program sets one, applies to the equipment — meeting one does not cover the other, so a tester current on one calendar can still be behind on the other.
What the kit is, what testers weigh when buying one, and what our research could and could not verify about calibration and cost are covered in our backflow test kit guide.
Career information, not legal advice — renewal requirements come from the certifying body, the state licensing program or the water purveyor that registers you, and the calibration rule our research could not confirm is attributed to the local purveyor or code authority. Confirm the current requirements with each before you book a class, schedule work or let a renewal date pass.
