Two routes lead people into gas fitting: a plumbing apprenticeship that carries gas work, or a job with a gas utility and its federally required qualification program.
Which licence you need — and the steps behind it — is the state's to name.
Here are both routes, the requirements behind them, and how long the training takes.
Requirements to become a gas fitter
The requirements are set where you will work.
The credential is a state question: some states issue a standalone gas-fitter licence separate from the plumber licence, while others license gas work in combination with plumbing.
The licence you need, and the steps behind it, follow your state's rules.
What the job itself involves — the piping, the appliances, the codes and the pay — is the gas fitter career guide's subject; this page is only about getting in.
The structures have a familiar shape.
Alabama licenses plumbing and gas fitting as two trades, each with apprentice, journeyman and master levels, through the Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board.
DC's Board of Industrial Trades licenses plumbing, gasfitting and a combined plumbing/gasfitting credential at those same three levels.
Maryland's State Board of Plumbing licenses Apprentice, Journey and Master Plumber/Gas Fitters alongside separate Apprentice, Journey and Master Natural Gas Fitters.
Where an entry rung exists, you can start young: Maryland requires its apprentices to be at least 16 years of age — for the Plumber/Gas Fitter apprenticeship and the Natural Gas Fitter one alike.
Louisiana's natural gas fitter exam tests the 2021 International Fuel Gas Code, so the jurisdiction's fuel gas code is the study material there.
And the utility side adds a federal layer: 49 CFR Part 192, Subpart N requires pipeline operators to qualify the individuals who perform covered tasks.
Rules change — confirm with your board
The plumbing route: gas fitter apprenticeship to journeyman
One route runs through the plumbing trade's ladder: get hired as a plumbing or gas fitter apprentice, log supervised work hours, test up to journeyman, and later to master.
Where gas work is licensed inside the plumbing trade — or by the same board — this apprenticeship is the on-ramp to the gas side.
The combined credentials make that literal.
DC offers a combined plumbing/gasfitting licence at apprentice, journeyman and master levels, and Maryland's Plumber/Gas Fitter credential pairs the trades at all three levels.
Train on one of those combined ladders and one licence covers both trades.
Elsewhere, gas fitting is a trade of its own, and the structures differ.
Alabama's PGFB structures gas fitting with apprentice, journeyman and master levels, mirroring the plumbing trade beside it.
Louisiana licenses Natural Gas Fitters separately through SPBLA, where a Master Natural Gas Fitter may employ apprentices and fitters.
Arkansas issues separate restricted gas fitter licences — Gas Fitter Trainee, Gas Fitter and Gas Fitter Supervisor.
If you are weighing this route, our step-by-step guide to how to become a plumber walks the apprenticeship ladder — helper job, hours, classroom training, journeyman exam — in detail.
The utility route: qualifying on the gas company's side
The second route runs through the gas utility — the company that owns the pipeline system, the mains and service lines that bring gas to the meter — and through its qualification program.
Utility gas work carries a federal layer.
Pipeline rules in 49 CFR Part 192, Subpart N require pipeline operators to qualify the individuals who perform covered tasks on a pipeline facility — the Operator Qualification rule.
Until you are qualified, you may perform a covered task only when a qualified individual directs and observes the work.
The rule addresses pipeline operators, not individual workers — in practice, the qualification is the operator's to run.
Whether your state also requires a credential for utility work is a question our research did not settle — ask the utility what it requires and your state board what it licenses.
Our utility gas fitter guide covers the OQ rule, hiring tests and pay on the gas company's side.
Licensing: which credential covers gas work where you live
Which credential covers gas fitting where you live decides everything above — the route, the hours and the exam.
Some states issue standalone gas-fitter credentials separate from the plumber licence; others license gas work in combination with plumbing, the way DC and Maryland do; Texas regulates LP-gas (propane) through the Railroad Commission instead.
Our gas fitter license guide names the states that license gas fitters separately and explains the levels and exams.
Where the plumbing licence is the one that carries gas work, its plumbing license requirements are the ones to read.
How long does it take to become a gas fitter?
The numbers depend on the state: where states publish their requirements, the hours, the years and the structures differ.
Three published examples show the spread.
Louisiana's Natural Gas Fitter licence takes 3,000 hours of gas-fitting work on an indenture, or 4,000 hours unindentured, plus an 80-question, 3-hour written exam on the 2021 International Fuel Gas Code and a 30-minute practical.
DC's Board of Industrial Trades lists 4 years / 8,000 work hours for journeyman plumber/gasfitter exam eligibility, and 8 years / 16,000 hours at the master level — and it waives the journeyman exam with proof of completing a nationally certified apprenticeship.
Arkansas's gas fitter licences are separate restricted ones — Gas Fitter Trainee, Gas Fitter and Gas Fitter Supervisor — all expiring June 30.
