Lost your EPA 608 card?
An EPA 608 certification card replacement comes from the certifying organization that issued the original — not from EPA.
EPA does not issue certification cards and cannot replace a lost one; the organization that administered your test can.
If that organization has closed, EPA lists two organizations that issue replacements from your documentation of passing.
Here is the process, step by step.
Who replaces a lost EPA 608 card? (Not the EPA)
An EPA 608 card replacement comes from the certifying organization that issued the original — never from EPA.
EPA does not issue certification cards and cannot replace a lost certification card; under the current rules it issues no 608 cards at all, so any process that starts at an EPA office starts in the wrong place.
The organization to contact is the one that gave you the test.
Every Section 608 exam is taken through an EPA-approved technician certification program, and that program is both the issuer of your wallet card and the keeper of your passing record.
And to head off the panic: a lost card does not un-earn your certification.
The card is the proof, not the credential — if your certifying organization can still verify you, you are still certified, and EPA 608 certification does not expire.
New to the credential itself?
Our guide to EPA 608 certification covers what it is, the four types (I, II, III and Universal), and who needs which.
What if your testing organization closed?
A closed program does not invalidate your certification.
EPA states that certification credentials issued by a program during the time that it was approved are still valid — so a card from a testing organization that has since stopped testing remains good.
The physical card is another matter.
If your original certifying organization is out of business but you have documentation of passing, EPA lists two organizations that will issue a replacement card and maintain a record of your certification:
- ESCO Institute — Mount Prospect, IL — 800-726-9696
- Ferris State University — Big Rapids, MI — 866-880-7674
You send a copy of your documentation to one of the two; the organization issues the new card and keeps a record of your certification going.
If you cannot document the certification at all — no organization can verify that you passed — neither EPA nor a testing organization can issue a replacement, and retaking the Section 608 test is the only path back.
Confirm the process before you send anything
What proof do you need to get a replacement?
It depends on which of the three paths you are on.
Your certifying organization is still operating.
The proof is already on its side: the program that administered your exam holds your passing record, so contact it and follow its replacement process.
What it asks you to supply is its own policy to set.
The original organization is out of business.
Now the proof is yours to provide — documentation of passing.
The Section 608 rule requires certified technicians to keep a copy of their certificate at their place of business, and to keep it until three years after they stop working as a technician.
A certificate copy kept that way is the documentation this path runs on; if you no longer have it and no organization can verify your certification, the retake path below applies.
Nothing can be verified.
No document fixes this: with no organization able to verify your certification, EPA says a replacement cannot be issued and the test must be retaken.
Not sure which organization issued your card in the first place?
That is a verification question, and our epa 608 certification lookup guide walks it — how to identify the issuer and check a certification when there is no national database.
What does a replacement cost — and can you get a digital card?
Individual organizations set their own replacement prices, and our research has not verified what any of them charges.
Ask the organization that issued your card — or, if it closed, the replacement organizations — what a replacement costs before you commit.
The same applies to a retake, if it comes to that.
Digital options are limited in the same way.
The rule itself requires a physical document: certifying programs must issue a standard wallet-sized card within 30 days of the test.
Whether an organization also offers a digital copy or an app-based credential is its own policy, and our research has not verified which organizations do — ask yours.
Whatever form your proof takes, keep it with the same care the rule asks of your place of business.
Card sorted, or replacing it because a new employer asked for proof?
