How Do You Get an HVAC License in Utah?

Founder, HVACHires
Last verified September 2026

Utah issues no licence to individual HVAC technicians that our research could confirm.

The statewide HVAC licence belongs to the business: the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) issues the H100 HVAC Contractor licence, which replaced the S350 class, and each H100 contractor must employ a DOPL-designated H100 Qualifier.

Work on gas piping, combustion-air vents, exhaust venting or gas-appliance derating requires a separate Certified Natural Gas Technician certification, and work that could violate a refrigerant circuit's integrity requires federal EPA 608 certification.

Verify before you rely on this

Licensing rules change by statute, board rule and local ordinance, and this page is career information, not legal advice. Confirm every requirement with the licensing board (or, where licensing is local, the city or county) before you apply, schedule an exam, count hours or bid a job. In Utah, that is the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL).

At a glance

Statewide license

Not one for individual technicians that our research could confirm.

The statewide HVAC licence is the H100 HVAC Contractor licence DOPL issues to the business; gas work adds a Certified Natural Gas Technician certification.

Who licenses

The Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL), under Utah Administrative Code Rule R156-55a and its contracting pages.

License levels

No technician or journeyman HVAC licence that our research could confirm.

The credentials are the H100 HVAC Contractor licence, the H100 Qualifier designation and the Certified Natural Gas Technician certification.

Experience to qualify

H100 Qualifier: 4,000 hours in five years with at least 90% HVAC work, or a Utah journeyman, master or residential plumber licence.

The business also completes a pre-licensure course from ABC, UHBA or AGC of Utah.

Exam

Prov runs Utah contractor exams.

An H100 Qualifier passes the Utah Contractor Business and Law exam and scores at least 70% on the Utah HVAC written exam; the gas certification needs the RMGA exam β€” or an approved equivalent β€” with at least 80%.

Renewal & CE

Contractor licences expire November 30 of odd-numbered years; renewal is $128 with 6 hours of approved CE per period (3 core, at most 3 online).

Individual-credential renewal was not captured by our research; ask DOPL.

Reciprocity

Utah offers licensure by endorsement to contractors licensed in another US state, territory or district.

Our research found no named-state HVAC reciprocity agreements.

License lookup

DOPL's 'Verify a License' search, linked from its commerce.utah.gov/dopl pages.

Licences are issued to the business entity, so search the entity's name.

The Utah HVAC license ladder

  1. Certified Natural Gas TechnicianSpecialty

The individual certification Utah requires for installing, modifying, maintaining, cleaning, repairing or replacing gas piping, combustion-air vents or exhaust venting, or derating a gas appliance for altitude β€” HVAC workers included; a current Utah journeyman or residential journeyman plumber licence counts as documentation of exemption.

  2. H100 QualifierOther

The individual designation each H100 licence must have behind it: 4,000 hours in five years with at least 90% of the work HVAC, or a Utah journeyman, master or residential plumber licence instead, plus Utah's Business and Law and HVAC exams.

  3. H100 HVAC ContractorContractor

The business licence a company needs to contract for HVAC work in Utah; DOPL issues it to the entity, which must employ a DOPL-designated H100 Qualifier.

Does Utah require a state HVAC license?

Not for the individual technician, as far as our research could confirm: DOPL licenses plumbers as individuals, and the only individual HVAC credential our research found in DOPL's contractor licensing rule R156-55a, apart from the gas certification, is the H100 Qualifier designation β€” check DOPL to confirm the current list.

Licensing reaches HVAC work through the business instead: the H100 HVAC Contractor licence, which each licensee may back only with a DOPL-designated H100 Qualifier.

Two other requirements attach to individuals doing the work.

Work on gas piping, combustion-air vents, exhaust venting or altitude derating of gas appliances requires a Certified Natural Gas Technician certification, even for HVAC workers β€” though a current Utah journeyman or residential journeyman plumber licence counts as documentation of exemption.

And refrigerant-circuit work carries a federal requirement: EPA 608 certification.

What are the Utah HVAC license levels, and what can each legally do?

Utah's HVAC credentials, as far as our research found, are three β€” and none of them is a journeyman or technician licence.

The H100 HVAC Contractor licence is what lets a company contract for HVAC work; DOPL issues it to the business entity β€” a corporation, LLC, partnership, joint venture or similar β€” not to the owner or qualifier.

The H100 Qualifier is the individual designation behind it: an H100 licensee may employ only a DOPL-designated H100 Qualifier as its qualifier.

The Certified Natural Gas Technician certification is an individual certification covering gas piping, combustion-air vents, exhaust venting and altitude derating of gas appliances.

Utah replaced the old S350 HVAC specialty classification with the H100 class; the transition is detailed in the recent-changes section below.

What does each level require: hours, training and fees?

An H100 Qualifier applicant needs 4,000 hours over no more than five years working for licensed H100, B100, S350, P200 or P201 contractors, with at least 90% of the workload directly related to HVAC work under an H100 Qualifier's direct supervision β€” or a Utah journeyman, master or residential plumber licence instead.

The qualifier passes the Utah Contractor Business and Law exam and scores at least 70% on the Utah HVAC written exam.

For gas work, a current Utah journeyman or residential journeyman plumber licence counts as documentation of exemption; approved training routes include federal apprenticeship, Utah college apprenticeship programs, trade union apprenticeships, the Rocky Mountain Gas Association (RMGA) and the Home Builders Association of Utah.

The business completes a pre-licensure course from ABC, UHBA or AGC of Utah β€” 25 hours for specialty contractors, 30 for general, plumbing and electrical; confirm with DOPL which applies to H100.

A Utah bond requirement, any job-value exemption threshold, and the H100 application fee were not confirmed in our research; contractor renewals cost $128.

β€œshall have completed a total of 4,000 hours over no more than a five year period as an employee of one or more licensed contractors designated as H100, B100, S350, P200, or P201 where at least 90% of the H100 Qualifier applicant's work load was directly related to HVAC work”

Who gives the Utah HVAC exam, and what is on it?

Prov administers Utah's contractor exams, in person at Prov testing centres or online through ExamRoom AI; candidates get 3 attempts spaced 30 days apart, and each retake after that waits 180 days.

An H100 Qualifier candidate must pass the Utah Contractor Business and Law exam and score at least 70% on the Utah HVAC written exam.

For the gas certification, trainees must pass the RMGA Gas Appliance Installers Certification Exam, or an approved equivalent, with a minimum score of 80%.

Our research did not capture the content outline of the Utah HVAC exam, so Prov's candidate information and DOPL's contracting exam page are the place to check what it covers.

β€œYou are allowed 3 attempts, 30 days apart with each subsequent retake 180 days apart”

How do you renew, and how many CE hours does Utah require?

Utah contracting licences expire on November 30th of odd years, on a two-year cycle, and renewal costs $128.

Renewal takes 6 hours of approved continuing education per licensing period β€” 3 of them core β€” and at most 3 of the 6 hours may be online.

Those numbers belong to the contractor licence.

Our research did not capture renewal terms or CE for the individual credentials β€” the H100 Qualifier designation or the Certified Natural Gas Technician certification β€” so confirm both with DOPL before you plan a renewal.

Federal EPA 608 certification, by contrast, does not expire.

β€œContracting licenses expire on November 30th of odd years.”

Does Utah accept HVAC licenses from other states?

At the contractor level, through endorsement: Utah offers licensure by endorsement to contractors already licensed in another US state, territory or district.

That is an application route, not an automatic swap β€” the state's own page says you may qualify for endorsement, so ask DOPL what documentation it wants for the H100 class.

Our research found no named-state HVAC reciprocity agreements for Utah, and it did not establish an endorsement route for the individual credentials; for the H100 Qualifier designation and the Certified Natural Gas Technician certification, ask DOPL how out-of-state experience and certifications are treated.

How do you look up a Utah HVAC license?

DOPL's 'Verify a License' search is the lookup Utah's own pages point to, linked from the DOPL pages under commerce.utah.gov/dopl; our research did not capture the search's direct web address, so start from the Division's site.

Because Utah contractor licences are issued to the business entity rather than the owner or qualifier, the licence you find will belong to the business, not to a person.

When you check an HVAC contractor, also ask which individual DOPL designated as its H100 Qualifier β€” if that person leaves, the qualifier and the company must notify DOPL in writing within 10 days, and the company then has 60 days to replace them or the licence can be revoked.

Recent change: Utah replaced S350 with H100

Utah replaced the S350 HVAC specialty classification with the H100 HVAC Contractor licence.

Anyone holding an active S350 licence in good standing on January 1, 2026 is deemed to hold an H100 licence in good standing for the remainder of the licensing period ending November 30, 2027.

For that period no reapplication is required β€” but our research did not cover what renewal after November 30, 2027 will require, so confirm with DOPL, and check your licence record shows the H100 class.

β€œAny person holding an active S350 -- HVAC Contractor license in good standing as of January 1, 2026 shall be deemed to hold an H100-HVAC Contractor license in good standing for the remainder of the licensing period ending November 30, 2027”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need an HVAC license in Utah?

Utah has no individual HVAC technician licence that our research could confirm β€” the statewide licence is the H100 HVAC Contractor licence, issued by DOPL to the business.

As an individual, work on gas piping, combustion-air vents, exhaust venting or gas-appliance derating requires a Certified Natural Gas Technician certification, and work that could violate a refrigerant circuit's integrity requires federal EPA 608 certification.

To run HVAC jobs under your own business, you need the H100 licence backed by an H100 Qualifier.

Confirm the current rules with DOPL before you rely on any of this.

Is there a journeyman HVAC license in Utah?

Not one our research could confirm.

The only individual HVAC credential our research found in Utah's contractor licensing rule R156-55a, apart from the gas certification, is the H100 Qualifier designation β€” an experienced-worker credential needing 4,000 hours in five years with at least 90% HVAC work, or a Utah journeyman, master or residential plumber licence, plus the Business and Law and HVAC exams.

If a Utah job posting asks for a journeyman HVAC licence, ask the employer which credential they mean.

What is an H100 Qualifier in Utah?

The individual an H100 licence must have behind it.

DOPL designates a person as the licence's qualifier, and an H100 licensee may employ only an H100 Qualifier in that role.

To qualify, an applicant completes 4,000 hours within five years working for licensed H100, B100, S350, P200 or P201 contractors with at least 90% HVAC work under an H100 Qualifier's direct supervision, or holds a Utah journeyman, master or residential plumber licence, then passes the Utah Contractor Business and Law exam and scores at least 70% on the Utah HVAC written exam.

How much does an HVAC license cost in Utah?

The figure our research confirmed is the renewal: $128 for a Utah contracting licence, which expires November 30 of odd-numbered years.

Our research did not capture the H100 application fee, so ask DOPL before you apply.

Budget for the rest of the requirements too: the 25- or 30-hour pre-licensure course, the exams, and liability insurance of at least $1,000,000 per incident and $2,000,000 total, plus workers' compensation or a waiver.

Does Utah require EPA 608 certification for HVAC work?

For work that could violate a refrigerant circuit's integrity, yes β€” but that is federal law, not a Utah licence.

Under the EPA 608 rule, anyone who could reasonably be expected to violate the integrity of a refrigerant circuit while maintaining, servicing, repairing or disposing of appliances containing CFC/HCFC refrigerants or non-exempt substitutes must pass an exam from an EPA-approved technician certification program.

EPA 608 is a federal certification, separate from DOPL's H100 licence and the state's gas certification.
