DoD SkillBridge gives transitioning service members civilian training and work experience during the last 180 days of service β€” and the pipe trades run some of its best-known programs.

The United Association's Veterans in Piping course trains you in HVAC-R, pipe fitting and welding or fire suppression, free of charge, with no prior experience required.

Here is how eligibility works, how to find an HVAC or plumbing program, and what comes after.

What SkillBridge is

DoD SkillBridge is the Department of Defense program that connects soon-to-be veterans with civilian training and work experience.

It offers that training and experience to service members who have 180 days or fewer of service remaining before discharge β€” you spend part of your final stretch learning a civilian job while you are still in uniform.

The training comes from organizations outside the military.

Employers can sign up as SkillBridge training providers and host service members in their last 180 days, and labor organizations run SkillBridge programs too β€” that is where the pipe trades come in.

The United Association's Veterans in Piping program is a DoD SkillBridge program that gives transitioning active-duty members 118 days (720 hours) of accelerated training in trades including HVAC-R.

Not every military-to-trades organization is a SkillBridge program.

Helmets to Hardhats is a 501(c)(3) joint labor-management nonprofit that connects service members, veterans and Guard and Reserve members with construction-trades training and careers; by the organization's own count, it has helped close to 50,000 military personnel move into construction-trades careers since 2003.

H2H is a connector you can use alongside SkillBridge, not a program with a guaranteed seat β€” more on that below.

Who's eligible and when

The DoD-level rule is timing.

SkillBridge training and work experience are for service members who have 180 days or fewer of service remaining before discharge.

DoD's own site is the authority for the complete eligibility picture; the 180-day window is the rule every program builds on.

Programs then add requirements of their own.

UA VIP requires applicants to be on active duty and inside their 180-day transition window when the VIP course both begins and ends β€” the whole course has to fit inside your window, so check the calendar from both ends before you plan your final months around it.

UA VIP programs are open to applicants from all branches, and no prior pipe-trades experience is required.

One requirement catches HVAC applicants specifically: UA VIP HVAC-R applicants must provide a three-year driving abstract showing a clean record, and applicants with multiple tickets or a DUI will not be considered for the HVACR program.

That is a UA VIP requirement, not a DoD one.

HVAC and plumbing SkillBridge programs

The flagship for this trade is UA Veterans in Piping.

VIP provides 118 days (720 hours) of accelerated training, and it offers three separate courses: Fire Suppression, Pipe Fitting/Welding, and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC-R).

There are nine VIP programs located on seven different military installations, open to applicants from all branches β€” UA VIP lists its installations and course locations on its own site, so check there for what is nearest you.

Cost is where VIP stands out.

The program is free of cost to participants and to the Department of Defense, paid for by UA members and partner contractors, and it does not use your GI Bill benefits.

If you are weighing education benefits for trade school as a separate route, VIP leaves them untouched.

Which military jobs lead here?

The Defense Department's COOL tool is the official place to check how your military occupation maps to civilian credentials and trades.

Our research did not verify the occupation codes themselves, so use the tool rather than any third-party list.

UA VIP is not the only shape a SkillBridge entry can take.

Employers can become SkillBridge training providers and host service members in their last 180 days β€” which means an HVAC or plumbing contractor can be the host, not just a union.

Our research did not surface a directory of HVAC- and plumbing-specific SkillBridge partners; the DoD SkillBridge site is where participating organizations are listed.

Helmets to Hardhats, meanwhile, connects you with construction-trades training and apprenticeship opportunities as a nonprofit connector β€” with one caution: H2H's own pages do not promise direct entry or advanced standing into a UA apprenticeship.

Direct-entry rules are set by each local program, so ask the local, not the connector.

For what UA training looks like once you are in, see our union HVAC apprenticeship guide and its union plumbing counterpart β€” and if you are aiming at the plumbing side specifically, plumbing apprentice jobs show which contractors near you are hiring.

How to get command approval

The timing facts are the easy half.

SkillBridge happens while you are still serving, inside your final 180 days, and UA VIP additionally requires you on active duty and in your window for the whole course.

The half our research did not pull is the paperwork: each branch runs its own approval process for releasing a service member into a civilian program, and those steps live with your chain of command and the branch resources behind skillbridge.osd.mil β€” not on this page.

Treat the DoD SkillBridge site and your transition office as the authority for the authorization steps.

What you can do is arrive at that conversation prepared.

The sequence most applicants follow:

  1. Pick your program and its dates

Choose the course β€” for the pipe trades, UA VIP's HVAC-R, Pipe Fitting/Welding or Fire Suppression tracks β€” and confirm when and where it runs.
  2. Lay the course over your 180-day window

The course must begin and end inside your transition window while you are on active duty. A course that does not fit your window is not an option, however good it looks.
  3. Gather the program's own entry requirements

For UA VIP HVAC-R that includes a three-year driving abstract with a clean record. Walking in with the checklist ready makes the conversation concrete.
  4. Work the approval through your chain of command

Your branch's process decides whether you can attend. Start early β€” your window is fixed, and approval is not instant.

Confirm before you build your exit plan around it

Program availability, entry requirements and approval steps are set by DoD, your branch and the program sponsor, and they change. Verify the current details with your command and skillbridge.osd.mil β€” and with UA VIP at uavip.org β€” before you commit your final months to any program.

What happens after the program

Finish a SkillBridge placement and you are a transitioning service member with real training behind you.

What it converts into depends on the program.

UA VIP's own site describes what its graduates receive; our research confirmed the course itself β€” 118 days, 720 hours, three trades β€” but not the placement step, so ask the program directly what it promises before you count on it.

If a contractor hosted your SkillBridge placement, that host is your most natural first interview.

Employers join as training providers to work with service members in their last 180 days, and an employer that has watched you for the length of a placement knows exactly what it would be hiring.

When a placement goes well, the host is the first place to ask about a job β€” and our listings show who is hiring: HVAC technician jobs and plumbing apprentice jobs.

Two questions to settle before you assume anything about credit.

Whether your SkillBridge hours count toward a registered apprenticeship is the sponsor's call; whether they count toward a licence is the licensing authority's call where you will work.

Our research did not confirm credit rules for either, so ask the program sponsor and your state licensing board directly β€” and if you are still weighing routes into the trade, our guides to HVAC apprenticeship programs and paid HVAC training cover the civilian paths.

For what the trade pays once you are established, the HVAC technician salary page compiles the Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data.

Career information, not legal or benefits advice. SkillBridge eligibility and approval are set by the Department of Defense and your branch; program rules are set by each sponsor. Confirm current details with your command, skillbridge.osd.mil and the program before you act on anything here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you get paid during SkillBridge?

SkillBridge placements happen while you are still on active duty, inside your last 180 days of service.

Whether military pay and benefits continue during a placement is set by DoD and your branch β€” our research did not confirm the rules, so treat skillbridge.osd.mil and your command as the authority.

What is confirmed for UA VIP: the program is free of cost to participants and does not use GI Bill benefits.

What is UA Veterans in Piping?

UA VIP is the United Association's DoD SkillBridge program for transitioning active-duty members: 118 days (720 hours) of accelerated training in one of three courses β€” Fire Suppression, Pipe Fitting/Welding, or HVAC-R.

It runs nine programs on seven military installations, is open to all branches, requires no prior pipe-trades experience, and is free to participants and to DoD.

Can SkillBridge hours count toward an HVAC apprenticeship or a licence?

That depends on rules our research did not confirm.

Credit toward a registered apprenticeship is decided by the program sponsor; credit toward a licence is decided by the licensing authority where you will work.

Before you count any of your 180-day training toward an hour requirement, ask the sponsor and the licensing board directly.

Can you use SkillBridge to become a plumber?

Yes.

The pipe-trades SkillBridge route runs through UA Veterans in Piping, whose three courses include Pipe Fitting/Welding alongside HVAC-R and Fire Suppression, and employers can also host SkillBridge training as providers.

The same rules apply: you must be inside your 180-day window, on active duty for the whole course, and approved through your branch's process.
