What is UTI's HVAC program like, and what does it cost?

The verifiable federal record is narrow: College Navigator (IPEDS) lists an HVAC maintenance program at Universal Technical Institute–Southern California (Long Beach) with 43 completers, but no HVAC-specific tuition for that campus — its listed programs run $25,050 to $56,600.

Here is what the record shows, what it leaves out, and the alternatives worth comparing.

What UTI's HVAC program covers

Start with the federal record.

In College Navigator, the U.S. Department of Education's school database, the campus Universal Technical Institute–Southern California (Long Beach) reports completers under the program name Heating, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Refrigeration Maintenance Technology/Technician — 43 of them.

That is the core of what our research could verify about UTI's HVAC offering at the program level: a maintenance-technology program at that campus, with a federal completions record behind it.

That is also where the verified record stops.

Our research did not confirm UTI's course-by-course curriculum from a primary source, so we cannot tell you which courses sit in the sequence or how the shop time is structured — the campus's own catalog answers that.

Ask the campus for the course list in writing, along with which certifications the program prepares you for.

What BLS says about programs like this one frames what the credential should do.

The typical entry-level education for HVAC mechanics and installers is a postsecondary nondegree award, followed by a lengthy period of on-the-job training — school is the compressed start, not the finish line.

The federally required credential for refrigerant work is EPA 608: under 40 CFR 82.161, anyone who could reasonably be expected to violate the integrity of a refrigerant circuit while maintaining, servicing, repairing or disposing of appliances containing CFC/HCFC or non-exempt substitute refrigerants must pass an exam from an EPA-approved technician certification program.

BLS notes that exam is typically included as part of completing a postsecondary HVACR program — whether UTI's program bundles it is a campus question.

One UTI entry we could verify sits on a credential list: EPA's approved programs for Section 609 technician certification include UTI (the version of the list we read was updated June 25, 2026).

Section 609 is the separate motor-vehicle credential — EPA requires anyone who repairs or services a motor vehicle air conditioning system for consideration (payment or bartering) to be certified under it — and a 609 certification does not let you work on or buy refrigerant for stationary HVAC/R equipment; that requires Section 608.

Useful to know if you are comparing schools with an eye to mobile A/C as well as building systems.

UTI HVAC program cost and length

The cost question deserves a straight answer: our research could not verify a UTI HVAC tuition from a primary source.

College Navigator does not list an HVAC-specific tuition for Universal Technical Institute–Southern California (Long Beach); the listed programs for that campus run $25,050 to $56,600.

That range prices the campus's programs generally — it is not an HVAC program price, and we will not quote one the data does not support.

When we checked, the school's own HVAC page on uti.edu returned a 404 to our fetch.

What to do with that gap: make the campus fill it.

Ask the financial aid office at the campus you would attend for the current program price in writing — tuition, fees, books, tools — plus the scheduled length, the calendar, and what federal aid you qualify for.

No primary source publishes a national average HVAC school cost, so the prices we can check against a source are named-school figures in federal data, with the school and year attached — and UTI's HVAC listing currently has a hole where the price would be.

Length has the same gap.

Our research did not confirm the program's length.

The general frame from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is that HVAC school programs generally last 6 months to 2 years and lead to a certificate or an associate's degree — which end of that range UTI's program sits at is a question for the campus, not something we can answer from the data we read.

For scale, the nearest program-level figure we could verify for a private HVAC program belongs to a different school: Lincoln Technical Institute's Union, New Jersey campus lists its HVACR program at 50 credit hours, 12 months average completion, with $30,535 in tuition and fees plus $1,902 for books and supplies (2024-25, College Navigator) — one campus's listing, not a system-wide price.

Our Lincoln Tech HVAC profile takes that program apart.

Confirm UTI's price and length with the campus before you enroll

The federal data we checked lists no HVAC-specific tuition for UTI's program (our research did not confirm its length either), and listed prices change. Get the current total quote — tuition, fees, books, tools — in writing from the financial aid office at your campus, and ask there what federal aid you qualify for: federal student aid depends on a school's institutional accreditation, not on voluntary programmatic badges.

Outcomes: what the record shows

The verified outcome number is throughput: in College Navigator's completions table, as we read it, the Long Beach campus shows 43 HVAC maintenance completers.

That is a count of completers, not a placement rate.

What we do not have matters just as much: our research did not confirm graduation-rate or job-placement figures for UTI's HVAC program, and we will not guess at them.

Ask the campus for its current completion and placement disclosures in writing, and treat a marketing placement claim as something to verify against those documents.

We do not cite star ratings; the records we can check are the federal ones cited on this page.

What the credential signals to a contractor is narrower and more concrete than any review score.

The legal gate is EPA 608 for refrigerant work, covered above.

After that, BLS's finding governs: the typical entry-level education is a postsecondary nondegree award, followed by a lengthy period of on-the-job training.

Our research found no survey evidence that contractors prefer one school's graduates over another's; the shop-floor question is whether you show up with the cert and learn fast on live calls.

The occupation the program feeds — HVACR mechanics and installers, SOC 49-9021 — earned a national median of $61,010 per year ($29.33 per hour) in May 2025, per BLS's Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics.

That is an occupation-wide figure, not a UTI graduate figure.

The full national and state tables are on our HVAC technician salary page.

Alternatives to UTI's HVAC program

Public community colleges are the first place to compare, with two cautions.

Austin Community College (TX) listed $2,550 in-district annual tuition and fees for 2024-25, and Macomb Community College (MI) $3,660 in-district — those are institution-wide annual rates, not HVAC program prices.

And residency drives the spread: the same colleges charged $10,590 and $8,370 out-of-state respectively.

Public career-tech centers can be cheap too.

Tulsa Technology Center (OK) listed $4,200 tuition and fees for its largest program, 1,050 clock hours (2024-25) — that program is automotive, not HVAC, so do not read it as an HVAC price, but it shows how cheap public career-tech centers can be.

Among private options, Porter and Chester Institute (CT) listed $14,349 in tuition and fees for 2024-25 — an institution-level academic-year figure, and a full program may span more than one academic year.

Online study carries a low listed program price: Penn Foster's HVACR Technician Career Diploma listed at $1,139 ($939 with a pay-in-full promotion that ended September 29, 2026) or $59 per month as of September 29, 2026 — the school's whole-program price, which our HVAC school cost guide carries alongside the full named-school spread.

Two caveats travel with that price: the same BLS finding applies — competency typically takes a lengthy period of on-the-job training once you're hired — and a diploma is a credential, not a licence.

The alternative that flips the money flow is registered apprenticeship — you earn a paycheck while you train.

Under the Department of Labor's standards for registered programs, apprentices are paid a progressively increasing wage schedule tied to skill, and apprenticeable occupations require at least 2,000 hours of on-the-job learning.

Whether the speed of a school certificate or the earn-while-you-train apprenticeship route fits your situation is its own comparison — our school vs apprenticeship breakdown takes it apart, and the HVAC apprenticeship guide shows how to get into one.

If you are set on a private school, our profile of Lincoln Tech is the side-by-side, and the checklist for choosing an HVAC school covers the questions that catch what a brochure leaves out — accreditation and aid, EPA 608, tool kits, schedules, and how to pin down placement claims.

Career information, not legal or financial advice — program prices, schedules and disclosures change; confirm current details with the campus you would attend and certification requirements with the certifying organization.
