HVAC vs pipefitter starts with what the federal descriptions put first.
BLS describes pipefitters and steamfitters as installing and maintaining pipe, mostly in manufacturing, commercial, and industrial settings, and the UA's steamfitters work on high-pressure systems that move steam, hot water and chilled water.
HVAC technicians' work, in BLS's description, is installing, maintaining and repairing the HVACR systems.
On May 2025 BLS medians the fitter category paid $63,800 against $61,010 — and both trades are projected to grow faster than average.
What pipefitters and steamfitters do in HVAC: chilled water and steam
BLS describes pipefitters and steamfitters as installing and maintaining pipes that may carry chemicals, acids, and gases — mostly in manufacturing, commercial, and industrial settings — with steamfitters specializing in systems for liquids or gases at high pressure.
The UA's own description of steamfitting shows where HVAC fits: fabricating, installing, maintaining, and repairing high-pressure systems that move steam, hot water, and other industrial fluids, including chilled water and compressed air, with welding, rigging, and hydrostatic and pneumatic testing in the mix.
O*NET's definition of the combined occupation draws the HVAC connection itself: these workers "Assemble, install, alter, and repair pipelines or pipe systems that carry water, steam, air, or other liquids or gases" and "May install heating and cooling equipment and mechanical control systems."
That last clause — heating and cooling equipment installed by the pipe occupation — is the overlap this page is about, and the two descriptions weight it differently.
The pipe occupation's definition leads with the piping; installing heating and cooling equipment is something its workers "may" do.
Installing, maintaining and repairing the HVACR systems, by contrast, is the first duty BLS lists for the HVAC technician — and the federal certification rule, EPA 608, attaches to work that could reasonably be expected to violate the integrity of a refrigerant circuit (more on that below).
One caution before you compare anything federal about these trades: the fitter side is a bundle.
O*NET merged the old plumber and pipe fitter/steamfitter codes into a single occupation — 47-2152.00 Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters — that explicitly includes sprinkler fitters too.
Our sources carry no pipefitter-only federal wage or outlook figure — the federal category is the combined occupation — so every number for the fitter side on this page is the whole category.

Our pipefitter and steamfitter guides cover each role in depth, and the pipefitter vs steamfitter split gets its own comparison.
UA union structure: both trades under the same umbrella
The union structures overlap as much as the piping does.
The United Association (UA) says it represents approximately 409,000 plumbers, pipefitters, sprinkler fitters, HVACR service technicians, welders, and related trades in North America — both trades of this comparison are on that list.
Its apprenticeships typically last five years, with tracks in plumbing, sprinkler fitting, pipefitting, HVACR, steamfitting and welding, so the two routes train in parallel under the same body.
The overlap runs through credentials and agreements too: the United Association is among EPA's approved 608 certifying programs — the certification federal law ties to work that could violate the integrity of the refrigerant circuit — and on the employer side the Mechanical Contractors Association of America partners with the UA, with MCAA's MSCA department signing a UA National Service and Maintenance Agreement in effect Aug 1, 2021–July 31, 2027.
How UA membership actually works is its own topic: our plumbers and pipefitters union guide covers the UA's structure, and union HVAC apprenticeship covers the HVAC-side route in.
Service vs construction: the split that decides your days
On the HVAC side, the customer is in the job description.
BLS lists discussing malfunctions with customers among the trade's core duties, and O*NET rates "Discuss heating or cooling system malfunctions with users to isolate problems or to verify that repairs corrected malfunctions" as the highest-importance core task for HVACR mechanics (importance 85).
BLS adds that some technicians specialize in installation while others repair and maintain systems — the install/service split lives inside the trade itself.
The pipefitter and steamfitter descriptions lead with installing: BLS describes the trade installing and maintaining pipe that may carry chemicals, acids, and gases, mostly in manufacturing, commercial, and industrial settings, and the UA describes its steamfitters fabricating, installing, maintaining and repairing high-pressure systems, with welding, rigging, and hydrostatic and pneumatic testing in the work.
The federal job counts rhyme.
Building equipment contractors are the largest employer group for both occupations: 305,330 HVACR mechanics and installers and 340,140 plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters in May 2025 (a broad grouping — NAICS 2382, which also includes electrical contractors).
The differences show one tier down: for HVACR, the next-largest employers are merchant wholesalers (12,190) and fuel dealers (8,480); for the fitter category, utility system construction (14,960) and local government (11,480).
The premium niches point in different directions as well — the highest-paying industries for HVACR were computer systems design ($115,910 median), scheduled air transportation ($114,080) and natural gas distribution ($105,630), while the fitter category's top medians were electric power generation ($115,310), petroleum and coal products manufacturing ($106,550) and pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing ($105,800).
These are small niches, not typical jobs.
The state and metro maps overlap heavily.
The same three states lead the job counts in a different order: Florida (39,160), California (35,130) and Texas (34,730) HVACR jobs, against California (47,660), Texas (44,090) and Florida (29,260) in the fitter category — and New York-Newark-Jersey City is the biggest metro for both (21,820 HVACR; 21,040 fitters).
Pay and licensing compared
The latest federal wage data are the OEWS May 2025 release, published May 15, 2026.
Here is the occupation-level picture — national, wage-and-salary workers:

Read the gap at the middle, then at the top.
The fitter category's median was $2,790 above the HVACR median ($63,800 versus $61,010) — close enough that your local market and pay plan will decide more than the trade label.
At the 90th percentile the gap widens to $13,210 ($108,420 versus $95,210).
The top-paying metros by median were led by San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California ($107,560) and Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, Illinois-Indiana ($103,380) for the fitter category, against Fairbanks-College, Alaska ($93,820) and Anchorage, Alaska ($85,620) for HVACR.
The full percentile tables, state by state, live on our HVAC technician salary and pipefitter salary pages — this page stays at the summary level.
What the published figures include: OEWS counts base pay, commissions, production bonuses, incentive pay and tips, and it excludes the self-employed.
It excludes overtime pay, shift differentials, non-production bonuses and benefits — so techs who work overtime can out-earn the published figures.
One federal rule reaches this comparison — and it follows the work, not the trade.
Under 40 CFR 82.161, any person who could reasonably be expected to violate the integrity of the refrigerant circuit while maintaining, servicing, repairing or disposing of appliances containing CFC/HCFC or non-exempt substitute refrigerants must pass an exam from an EPA-approved technician certification program.
That is the EPA 608 certification — it attaches to the person whose tasks reach the circuit, HVAC technician or pipefitter alike.
State licence rungs are a different layer, and this page does not compare them; the detail lives in our HVAC licence guide.
Licensing is set by your board — verify before you act
Which path leads to commercial HVAC?
If the destination is commercial building systems, both descriptions reach it — one through the piping, one through the equipment.
The pipe route arrives through the piping: the UA's steamfitter description names steam, hot water and chilled water among the fluids its high-pressure systems move, and BLS places the trade's pipes mostly in manufacturing, commercial, and industrial settings.
The equipment route is the HVAC technician's: BLS notes that some technicians specialize in commercial refrigeration, radiant heating systems or testing and balancing.
The practical difference shows up in what each set of duties carries.
BLS's duties for the HVAC technician center on the HVACR systems, and EPA 608 is the federal certification that follows any work that could reasonably be expected to violate the integrity of the refrigerant circuit — the tasks, not the trade, decide when it applies.
The pipefitter's descriptions carry welding, rigging and pressure testing; the UA lists them in its steamfitter description.
Whichever way you lean, read real postings before you commit: the day-to-day in current HVAC technician jobs and pipefitter jobs listings will tell you which trade's ordinary Tuesday you would rather have.
Our commercial HVAC technician guide covers the commercial side from the equipment end, and how to get into commercial HVAC covers the routes in.
