ASSE 6030 (Verifier) and ASSE 6020 (Inspector) are advanced medical gas credentials in the ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 6000-2024, aligned with the medical gas requirements of NFPA 99-2024.
The state rules we hold tie the track to the licensed pipe trades — Kansas allows medical gas piping to be installed only by a state-licensed plumber who also holds the appropriate ASSE Series 6000 certification, and Louisiana issues a separate Medical Gas Verifier licence through its plumbing board.
Our research found no per-role prerequisites, exam formats or fees on ASSE's public pages — the standard is paid — so confirming with ASSE is part of the path.
ASSE 6020 vs 6030 vs 6040: which credential is which
The ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 6000 is the standard family behind the ASSE medical gas credentials, and its 2024 edition parallels NFPA 99-2024.
Within the series, 6020 Inspectors, 6030 Verifiers and 6040 Maintenance Personnel are separate professional qualifications.
The series lists them as separate standards, each its own credential, defined alongside the installer, designer and instructor roles.
The full 2024 series runs: 6005 generalist, 6010 installer, 6015 cryogenic installer, 6020 inspector, 6030 verifier, 6035 cryogenic verifier, 6040 maintenance, 6050 and 6055 instructors, 6060 designer, and 6070 design instructor.
The bulk-supply side has its own verifier too — 6035 covers Bulk Medical Gas/Cryogenic Fluid Central Supply Verifiers.
For career planning, the structure is the point: the series defines the roles that install, inspect, verify and maintain as separate credentials, so an installer credential is not an inspector or verifier credential.
What our research could not verify is the role-by-role duty definitions — the standard text is a paid document — including any independence requirement for verifiers.
Treat a specific duty list quoted from memory as unconfirmed, and take role-scope questions to ASSE International.
Experience requirements for ASSE 6020 and 6030
The gap first: our research did not find experience prerequisites for the 6010 installer credential on ASSE/IAPMO's public pages, and the same paid standard defines the rest of the Series 6000, so no verified years-of-experience figure for 6020 or 6030 appears in the sources behind this page.
If a course provider quotes one, ask what it is based on; the authoritative answer sits with ASSE and, where one exists, your state board.
What the state layer shows, in the rules quoted here, is who the medical gas track sits on top of: people already in the licensed pipe trades.
Alabama's medical gas piping endorsement requires a current third-party ASSE 6010 installer certification plus an apprentice, journeyman or master credential from the Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board (PGFB).
Kansas allows medical gas piping to be installed only by a plumber licensed under its state standards who also holds the appropriate ASSE Series 6000 certification.
And New Jersey's separate Master Plumbers Board certification for medical gas piping in health-care, dental and veterinary facilities — the installer-side layer — is open to licensed masters, journeymen who completed a USDOL apprenticeship, and apprentices with 3+ years.
Prerequisites: confirm with ASSE and your board
The exams and their cost: what's on the record
Our research did not find the exam formats, question counts or fees for the 6000-series credentials on ASSE's public pages — the standard that defines them is sold, not posted — so this page cannot quote them, and a provider advertising a price is quoting its own course.
Ask any provider what credential their course certifies you for, and confirm current pricing with ASSE International.
Two things are on the record.
First, the cycle: ASSE certifications must be renewed every three years, and recertifying up to six months early loses no time.
Second, the state layer publishes real fees where it charges them: the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana's licence page lists a $40 application fee for the medical gas installer licence and $210 for the Medical Gas Verifier licence.
Those are state licence fees, not ASSE exam fees — but they are the numbers you can actually plan around until ASSE answers your pricing question.
The state rules name certification bodies: Iowa requires a separate board-approved certification to install or repair medical gas piping, naming a valid NITC (or equivalent) certification.
Ask ASSE or your board which bodies administer the credential where you work.
What is a med gas verifier vs inspector vs maintenance tech?
Asked plainly: a verifier, an inspector and a maintenance tech are three separate professional qualifications in the 2024 series — 6020 Inspectors, 6030 Verifiers, 6040 Maintenance Personnel — each defined by a paid standard our research could not read.
What the verified record does establish is the structure and its anchor: the 2024 series parallels NFPA 99-2024, the Health Care Facilities Code edition it aligns with, and the roles are separate credentials — holding one is not holding the others.
The distinction that matters most when you research this: an ASSE 6020 medical gas inspector is not a jurisdiction's plumbing inspector.
Plumbing inspection as an agency career has its own credential standards — ASSE Series 16000 defines 16010 Plumbing Inspector, 16020 Mechanical Inspector, 16040 Plumbing Plan Examiner and 16050 Mechanical Plans Examiner — and it is its own track.
Our plumbing inspector guide covers that career; this page stays on the medical gas credentials.
Who employs medical gas verifiers and inspectors?
Federal data will not answer it: BLS publishes one combined occupation — Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters, SOC 47-2152 — and we hold no verified employment count or wage for medical gas verifiers, inspectors or maintenance techs within it.
Treat any figure you see for "medical gas verifier jobs" with care and check its source.
What the record does anchor is the setting: the ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 6000-2024 is aligned with the medical gas requirements of NFPA 99, the Health Care Facilities Code, and CMS requires Medicare-participating hospitals to follow the 2012 edition of NFPA 99, as incorporated in 42 CFR 482.41.
The state record shows one board recognizing the verifier role by name — Louisiana's SPBLA issues separate Medical Gas installer and Medical Gas Verifier licences — and one documented pipeline into medical gas work runs through the regular pipe trades: UA Local 72 (Atlanta) plumbers finish the Mechanical Trades Institute's five-year apprenticeship with a Georgia journeyman licence plus backflow and medical gas certifications.
Beyond that, our research holds no employer list for verifiers.
The postings are the practical answer — browse plumber jobs and read the descriptions for the credential.
How a plumber moves into medical gas verification
The layers the sourced record shows beneath this work are a licence, then the installer credential where a state names it; our research did not find the higher roles' own prerequisites on the public pages, so each step below ends with who to confirm with:
Hold the base pipe-trade licence
The state rules we hold tie medical gas work to the licensed pipe trades — Kansas allows medical gas piping to be installed only by a state-licensed plumber who also holds the appropriate ASSE Series 6000 certification. Where licensing is local rather than statewide, your city or county sets the base licence.Add the installer layer (6010)
Alabama's endorsement names a current third-party ASSE 6010 certification, and one apprenticeship on record finishes with medical gas certification already in hand — UA Local 72's Mechanical Trades Institute program in Atlanta ends with backflow and medical gas certifications alongside a Georgia journeyman licence.Step up to 6020, 6030 or 6040
Our research did not find the higher roles' prerequisites or exams on ASSE's public pages — the standard text is paid — so confirm the current requirements with ASSE International and with a certification body — Iowa's board-approved medical gas certification names NITC (or equivalent) — and with your state board where a verifier licence exists, as Louisiana's does.Plan both renewal calendars
ASSE certifications renew every three years, with a six-month early recertification window that loses no time. State layers add their own cycles — the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) renews its endorsements every three years — so diarize the ASSE cycle and your board's separately.
Where this lane sits in the trade: the plumber career path runs from apprentice through journeyman and master into specialties.

Travel and pay for medical gas verifiers
No federal wage line we hold covers this role.
BLS publishes one combined occupation — Plumbers, Pipefitters, and Steamfitters, SOC 47-2152 — and we hold no verified wage for medical gas verifiers, inspectors or maintenance techs within it, so the closest federal figure is the combined occupation's: a median of $30.67 an hour, or $63,800 a year, in May 2025 (OEWS).
Whatever one of these credentials adds in your market is a local number, not a federal one — check the postings and contract rates where you work.
The full national and state tables are on our plumber salary page.
Travel is the other half of the question, and the record is thinner: one compliance driver is national — CMS requires Medicare-participating hospitals to follow the 2012 edition of NFPA 99 — but our research holds no data on how often verifiers move between facilities; staffing is set by the employer and the project.

Certifications required for the verifier track
The stack, in the order the sources support it: your state plumbing licence (or the city or county equivalent where licensing is local), the ASSE 6010-style installer credential where your state names it — Alabama does, by name — then the credential for the role you're targeting, 6020, 6030 or 6040 — our research did not find its prerequisites on ASSE's public pages, so they are a confirm-with-ASSE item.
Underneath all of it sits the ASSE three-year renewal; on top, whatever your board's endorsement adds, like the three-year cycle TSBPE endorsements run.
The 6010 layer has its own page — see our medical gas certification guide — and the broader map of plumbing certifications worth getting puts this family next to backflow, EPA and the rest.
Career information, not legal or licensing advice. Credential prerequisites, exams, fees and state endorsement rules change — confirm the current requirements with ASSE International, your certification body, and your state licensing board, or the city or county where licensing is local.
