Completion cards

A plumber resume earns the interview by proving three things fast: your licence or apprentice registration, the systems you actually work on, and the credentials that back both.

Below are three plumber resume examples — a plumbing apprentice, a journeyman and a master/foreman — plus what belongs on the page at each level, how to list licenses, certifications and tools, and how to write a cover letter that matches.

What should a plumber resume include?

Give every line of a plumber resume one job: answer one of four questions about you — which level you work at, what licence or registration you hold, which systems you have actually piped, and which credentials back the first three.

Write for a hiring manager who is skimming a stack of applicants: name your level in the first two lines, so they never have to hunt for the licence.

Write each job's description the way a plumbing posting does: systems, materials, and the tasks you owned.

"Worked on plumbing" says nothing; "ran water and drainage rough-ins on residential remodels, set fixtures, and closed out work for inspections" gives the reader something to match against the van or crew they are staffing.

Not sure which hard and soft skills a shop is screening for?

Our plumber skills guide lists them, and the resume's skills block should speak that language.

New to the trade itself?

The plumber career guide covers the work, the settings and the entry routes before you write a word.

And if you spend your days on process piping and welding rather than water and drainage, the trade-adjacent pipefitter resume guide covers the pipe-trades version of this page.

  • Header — name, city and state, phone, professional email
  • Headline and summary — your level and licence status in the first two lines
  • Licences, registrations and certifications — a block near the top, never buried at the bottom
  • Experience — systems, materials, project type, and the tasks you owned
  • Education and apprenticeship — where your hours came from
  • Skills — joining methods, the machines you can run, the work you can be handed alone

Plumbing apprentice resume example (entry-level)

An apprentice resume has one job: show that you are registered, supervised, safe and dependable.

It is not the place to claim hours you cannot back — and in Texas, the example state for this sample, it would backfire anyway, because plumbing hours count toward the Tradesman or Journeyman exam only after the worker is registered with the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE) as a Plumber's Apprentice.

The registration is the resume's headline fact, and the hours log is the story behind it.

Note what the bullets do: every task is one a TSBPE licensee can hand an apprentice on site — Texas allows a Plumber's Apprentice to do plumbing only under direct supervision, meaning a licensee is on the job site at all times.

An apprentice resume that reads like it ran jobs alone can read as padded to anyone who knows the trade.

Casey Morales — San Antonio, TX · (210) 555-0172 · [email protected]

Summary: Registered Plumber's Apprentice with an OSHA 10 card, logging supervised hours on residential service and remodel work.

Licences and registrations: Plumber's Apprentice — Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners; OSHA 10 completion card.

Experience:

  • Plumbing apprentice — residential service contractor, San Antonio, TX, 2025 to present
  • Prepped rough-ins — cut, reamed and dry-fitted PVC, CPVC and PEX — under a licensed plumber's direct supervision.
  • Dug and backfilled water and sewer service lines to grade markings.
  • Set fixtures and cleared job sites so trim-out days ran without waiting on materials.
  • Kept the apprentice hours log current so the registered time counts toward the Tradesman or Journeyman exam.
  • Warehouse associate — plumbing supply house, San Antonio, TX, 2023 to 2025
  • Picked and staged pipe, fittings and water heaters for contractor will-call.

Education and apprenticeship: High school diploma, San Antonio, TX; enrolled in a UA plumbing apprenticeship.

Skills: PEX and PVC joining, soldering basics, hand and power tools, material handling, customer communication.

The apprenticeship line carries real weight, so name it precisely: the UA describes its apprenticeships as registered with the Department of Labor and typically lasting five years, covering plumbing, pipefitting, HVACR, welding and fire protection.

A supply-house job earns its place too — material knowledge is hireable.

Applying with no trade history at all is still workable; our entry-level plumbing jobs guide covers the roles beginners get hired for and what employers look for.

Journeyman plumber resume example

At journeyman level the resume's center of gravity moves up: the licence line sits right under the summary, and the bullets shift from assisting to owning — rough-ins, fixture setting, service diagnosis, and closing out work for inspections.

This sample is written for Maryland, which licenses a "Journey Plumber/Gas Fitter": a candidate must have held an apprentice licence for at least 4 years, completed 7,500 hours under a licensed master plumber, completed 32 hours of backflow prevention device testing training, and passed a written exam.

The licence name is the lesson — write the exact name your state issued, not a generic one.

Dana Whitfield — Baltimore, MD · (410) 555-0164 · [email protected]

Summary: Journey Plumber/Gas Fitter with eight years on residential and light-commercial water, drainage and gas systems, service and remodel.

Licence and certifications: Journey Plumber/Gas Fitter — Maryland State Board of Plumbing; 32 hours of backflow prevention device testing training; OSHA 30 completion card.

Experience:

  • Journeyman plumber — residential service and remodel contractor, Baltimore, MD, 2022 to present
  • Ran water, drainage and gas rough-ins on whole-home remodels, owning layout through trim-out.
  • Diagnosed and repaired service calls — water heaters, drains, leaks — on a per-van basis.
  • Set fixtures and closed out work for county inspections.
  • Directed one apprentice on prep, digging and material staging.
  • Plumbing apprentice — same contractor, 2017 to 2022
  • Completed the supervised hours and backflow training Maryland requires for the licence.
  • Prepped rough-ins, staged materials and kept the hours log current.

Education and apprenticeship: Maryland apprentice licence held 4+ years; 7,500 supervised hours under a licensed master plumber; high school diploma, Baltimore, MD.

Skills: copper and PEX water piping, PVC and cast-iron drainage, gas piping, water heater replacement, service diagnosis, permit close-out paperwork.

If the licence itself is the step you are working toward, our journeyman plumber license guide covers how states run the rung — including the states that do not have one.

Master plumber / foreman resume example

A master plumber resume sells two things at once: the licence class and the leadership.

Georgia, the example state here, licenses individual plumbers statewide at three classes — Journeyman Plumber, Master Plumber Class I and Master Plumber Class II — through its Division of Master Plumbers and Journeyman Plumbers, and the unrestricted Class II requires 5 years of experience with at least 4 as a licensed journeyman — two, for journeymen licensed before March 1, 2025 — including at least 2 years of unrestricted-scope work.

So the licence line carries proof on its own, and the bullets add what the master level is for: running the crew, owning the inspections, mentoring the apprentices.

Ray Coleman — Marietta, GA · (678) 555-0159 · [email protected]

Summary: Master Plumber, Class II (unrestricted), leading a four-plumber crew on residential service, remodel and new-construction work.

Licence: Master Plumber, Class II (unrestricted) — Georgia Division of Master Plumbers and Journeyman Plumbers.

Experience:

  • Master plumber / field foreman — residential service and remodel contractor, Marietta, GA, 2021 to present
  • Run a four-plumber crew across occupied-home remodels, service calls and new-construction rough-ins.
  • Check rough-ins and venting against the plumbing code before the inspector arrives.
  • Scope and quote service and remodel work for the owner.
  • Mentored two apprentices on the path to their journeyman exams.
  • Journeyman plumber — same contractor, 2016 to 2021
  • Ran remodel rough-ins and service repairs; closed out work for county inspections.

Education and apprenticeship: Five-year UA plumbing apprenticeship; Journeyman Plumber licence before advancing to Class II.

Skills: crew scheduling, code compliance checks, estimating service and remodel work, customer communication, copper, PEX, PVC and cast iron.

Show that arc on the page: licence class first, then the crew numbers, the inspections and the apprentices you brought along.

Working toward the master step?

Our master plumber license guide covers the top rung and how the states name it.

Listing licenses, certifications and tools

Order the credential block from strongest proof to supporting detail: government licence or registration first, trade certifications second, safety cards last.

Name the issuer on every line — "licensed plumber" is a phrase, "Master Plumber, Class II — Georgia Division of Master Plumbers and Journeyman Plumbers" is a credential with an issuer to check.

Use your state's own licence name.

The vocabulary is not uniform, so a generic line can misstate what you hold.

As of September 2026, four states — Delaware, Illinois, New Jersey and North Carolina — had a statewide plumbing licence with no journeyman rung, and in seven — Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New York and Wyoming — plumbers are licensed locally, by cities and counties or an industry board, rather than by the state; Ohio licenses plumbing contractors (businesses) but does not issue an individual plumber licence.

Write whatever you actually hold from whichever authority issued it — state board or local — and confirm what your jurisdiction requires with the licensing board where you plan to work.

NCCER.

Passing both a written assessment and a performance verification yields an NCCER craft certification, and NCCER credentials are tracked and verifiable online — list it as issued and let the employer verify it.

Backflow.

ASSE certifications, including the 5110 backflow tester, must be renewed every three years — list the credential with its issuer and keep the renewal date current.

Medical gas.

The ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 6000-2024 standards name the roles — 6010 for installers, 6020 for inspectors, 6030 for verifiers, among others — so list the specific standard you hold, and check what your state adds on top: in Kansas, for example — one of the locally licensed states above — medical gas piping may be installed only by a plumber licensed under the state's standards who also holds the appropriate ASSE Series 6000 certification.

Ask the board where you work before you claim the work.

OSHA cards.

Write the card you actually hold — OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 — and write it as a card: the Outreach classes produce course completion cards, and OSHA states that none of the Outreach courses is a certification.

The 10-hour class covers worker hazard awareness; the 30-hour class is more appropriate for supervisors or workers with some safety responsibility.

The program is voluntary and does not meet the training requirements of any OSHA standard — but states, cities or employers may require it, so match the card to what the posting asks for.

Tools.

A short tools line proves range without becoming a shopping list: the machines you can run unaided — press tool, pipe threader, drain cleaning machines, PEX expansion, torch and soldering — each names a task the shop can hand you on day one.

Which certifications are worth paying for is a different question; our plumbing certifications guide sorts the worthwhile from the optional.

Career information, not legal or licensing advice. Licensing requirements are set by state boards and, where licensing is local, by cities and counties; certifications are controlled by the bodies that issue them. Confirm current requirements with your state licensing board, or the local authority, before you act on them.

Never overstate a credential

A licence comes from a licensing authority — a state board or, where licensing is local, a city, county or industry board; a registration is not a licence; and an OSHA Outreach card is a completion card, not a certification — label each line as what it is. Requirements also differ by state and city, so confirm what a job actually requires with the licensing board where you plan to work, or the city or county where licensing is local.

Plumber cover letter tips

The cover letter's one job is to connect the resume to the posting in under a page — three short paragraphs, 150 to 250 words, no more.

Where the resume is proof, the letter is the pitch: why this shop, why you, and what level you actually are.

Paragraph 1 — name your level and licence.

"Registered Plumber's Apprentice with an OSHA 10 card, looking to log supervised hours" and "Journey Plumber/Gas Fitter with eight years on service and remodel" are two different letters; a journeyman plumber cover letter leads with the licence and the systems, an apprentice's leads with registration, supervision and what you want to learn.

Paragraph 2 — one specific proof.

Pick the line from your resume that best matches the posting — the remodel rough-ins, the service-call volume, the crew you ran — and give it two sentences of context.

Specific beats enthusiastic.

Paragraph 3 — the ask.

Say you would welcome an interview, name your availability, and stop.

The letter's last line hands the reader to the phone, so know what happens next: our plumber interview questions guide covers the questions shop owners and service managers actually ask.

One caution applies at every level: never let the letter claim a licence, class or certification the resume does not list — the letter and the resume should tell the same story.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should a plumber resume be?

Keep it to one page unless the second page is earning its space.

An apprentice, a journeyman with a couple of employers and a master with a crew-lead history all fit on one page.

Move to two only for long commercial or industrial histories or a credential list that has outgrown one — and cut anything that does not prove you can run the work in the posting.

How do I write a plumbing resume with no experience?

Lead with what you can get now: register as an apprentice where your state issues one, earn an OSHA 10 completion card, and list any work that proves the habits the trade runs on — reliability, physical work, customer contact.

A supply-house, warehouse or construction-labor job is relevant experience.

Our entry-level plumbing jobs guide covers the roles beginners get hired for and what employers look for.

Should I put my license number on my resume?

List the licence, its class and the board that issued it — that tells an employer who to ask.

The number itself is optional on the page: give it on request, or include it so a contractor can verify quickly.

For where a licence can be checked, our plumbing license lookup guide covers how to look up a plumbing licence state by state.

Do I need a cover letter for a plumbing job?

Send one when the posting asks for it, and consider a short one even when it does not — three paragraphs naming your level, licence and one matching proof take ten minutes to write.

Keep it under 250 words, and make sure every credential in the letter appears on the resume too.
