The Texas plumbing apprentice license is the Plumber's Apprentice registration from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners (TSBPE).
You get one by filing an application at age 16 or older with the $15 fee and a one-time fingerprint submission β before your first hour of work, because Texas counts plumbing experience toward the Tradesman and Journeyman exams only after you register.
Here is the process, the fees, the renewal, and the path the registration starts.
Who must register with TSBPE?
Plumbing is regulated statewide in Texas by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners β TSBPE.
The board's licence ladder has four rungs: Tradesman Plumber-Limited, Journeyman Plumber, Master Plumber and Plumbing Inspector.
Below all four sits the entry document: the Plumber's Apprentice registration.
Register if you are going to work as a plumbing apprentice in Texas.
Two TSBPE rules make it the first step rather than an optional one.
The board counts plumbing hours toward the Tradesman or Journeyman exams only after the worker is registered as a Plumber's Apprentice.
And an apprentice may perform plumbing only under direct supervision, which TSBPE defines as a licensee being on the job site at all times the plumbing work is happening.
You can register from age 16.
The registration is also a separate thing from an apprenticeship program: enrolment in a federally registered apprenticeship is a step your sponsor takes with the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship, which registers programs in Texas.
The TSBPE registration is yours, and you need it even inside a program β it is what turns your program's job-site hours into exam credit.
Every state draws its apprentice rung differently β some boards require an apprentice plumbing license and some let apprentices work unregistered.
Our national guide to the apprentice plumbing license question compares the states, and our plumbing license requirements guide explains the whole ladder the apprentice rung feeds.
The application: steps and fees
The application goes to TSBPE.
The fee is $15, the minimum age is 16, and the board requires a one-time fingerprint submission from all applicants and examinees.
In order, the steps look like this:
Register before your first hour
TSBPE counts plumbing experience toward the Tradesman or Journeyman exams only after you are registered as a Plumber's Apprentice. Filing first is what makes your hours worth anything.File the application with the $15 fee
The Plumber's Apprentice registration costs $15 and requires you to be at least 16 years old.Complete the fingerprint requirement
TSBPE requires a one-time fingerprint submission from all applicants and examinees. Done once, it stays on file as you move up the ladder.Work only under direct supervision
Your registration lets you perform plumbing only under direct supervision β a TSBPE licensee on the job site at all times the plumbing work is happening.Confirm the registration in the public look-up
TSBPE's Find a License / Registration search is the public way to check that a registration is on file.
Not every entry-level TSBPE registration is the apprentice card.
The board also issues Drain Cleaner-Restricted, Drain Cleaner and Residential Utilities Installer registrations at $18 each β and the Residential Utilities Installer requires 2,000 hours of experience as an apprentice, which is one more reason the apprentice registration tends to come first.

Renewal: $15 a year, every year
The registration renews every year for $15.
That is the requirement TSBPE publishes for the apprentice rung β keep the card current, because the exam clock runs on it.
Texas counts plumbing hours toward the Tradesman or Journeyman exam only after the worker is registered, so an active registration is what makes the hours you log count for anything.
The cliff applies to the registration itself.
Under the board's rule, you cannot renew a Texas plumbing licence, registration or endorsement that has been expired for more than two years β the person must start over as a registered apprentice and re-pass the exams.
A $15-a-year habit is cheap insurance for the 4,000 and 8,000 hours you are about to invest.
Not sure a registration is current?
TSBPE's Find a License / Registration look-up is public.
Check it before you rely on the card β yours or a future employee's.
The path to Tradesman and Journeyman
The registration is the bottom of a ladder TSBPE grades by supervised hours, and the hours you log as an apprentice are the exam eligibility later.
The first rung is Tradesman Plumber-Limited.
Its exam requires your Plumber's Apprentice registration, 4,000 hours of plumbing experience, and a TSBPE-approved 24-hour training course β or enrolment in, or completion of, a DOL Office of Apprenticeship program in place of the course.
A Tradesman Plumber-Limited works on one- and two-family dwellings under a Responsible Master Plumber.
Fees: $36 for the exam, $35 for the initial licence, $35 for each renewal.
The second rung is Journeyman Plumber, the licence most working plumbers carry.
Its exam requires 8,000 hours of plumbing experience plus a TSBPE-approved 48-hour course, with the same substitution: enrolment in or completion of a DOL Office of Apprenticeship program replaces the course.
Journeyman fees as of September 2026 are $40 for the exam, $40 for the initial licence and $40 for each renewal, and every Texas plumbing licensee completes 6 hours of continuing professional education to renew.
Both rungs examine the same way.
The written exams run through Pearson VUE, and Tradesman and Journeyman candidates who come up from apprentice registration also pass a hands-on practical exam at TSBPE's Austin or Waco exam centre.
An exam authorisation allows up to five attempts within one year, with waits of 30, 60 and then 90 days after successive failures.
The DOL-registered apprenticeship is the shortcut worth naming.
Texas is an Office of Apprenticeship state β the federal office registers programs here β and enrolling in, or completing, one of those programs is what exempts you from the 24-hour or 48-hour course.
It replaces the classroom, not the experience: the 4,000 and 8,000 supervised hours still have to be earned.
Above journeyman sits Master Plumber, which requires holding a journeyman licence β Texas's or another state's β for at least 2 years, or 1 year plus a completed DOL Office of Apprenticeship program.
The full Texas plumbing license ladder, including the Responsible Master Plumber designation that businesses need and the endorsements, is summarised on our Texas state page.
