Plumbing Apprenticeships in Nevada: Programs, Requirements and How to Apply

Founder, HVACHires
Last verified September 2026

The plumbing apprenticeships our research confirmed in Nevada are registered apprenticeship programs: on-the-job training with a sponsor, earning while you learn.

Nevada is a State Apprenticeship Agency state: the Nevada State Apprenticeship Council administers registered apprenticeship.

We confirmed four plumbing sponsors: Plumbers Local 525 (Las Vegas), Plumbers Local 350 (Sparks), PHCC of Nevada and the ABC Nevada Chapter.

Nevada issues no state journeyman or master plumber licence: Clark County requires plumbers to carry an ID card from the industry-founded Nevada Board of Plumbing Examiners (NBOPE).

Licensing rules change by statute, board rule and local ordinance, and this page is career information, not legal advice. Confirm every requirement with the licensing board (or, where licensing is local, the city or county) before you apply, schedule an exam, count hours or bid a job. In Nevada, that is the Nevada State Apprenticeship Council (NSAC), Office of the Labor Commissioner.

At a glance

Apprenticeship agency

Nevada is a State Apprenticeship Agency (SAA) state: registered apprenticeship is administered by the Nevada State Apprenticeship Council (NSAC), within the Office of the Labor Commissioner.

Apprentice registration

Our research found no state requirement for plumbing apprentices to register with a licensing board β€” an absence inferred rather than documented, so confirm with the NSAC.

Locally, Reno requires plumbing apprentices to carry a card from an approved apprenticeship program.

Union programs

Plumbers Local 525 JATC in Las Vegas (registered plumber/pipefitter apprenticeships) and Plumbers Local 350 JATC in Sparks (registered pipe fitter, plumber and refrigeration unit repairer apprenticeships).

Merit-shop programs

PHCC of Nevada (Henderson) sponsors a registered plumber apprenticeship in Clark County, and the ABC Nevada Chapter runs a registered Plumber apprenticeship in Reno.

Hours toward a license

Nevada issues no state journeyman or master plumber licence.

The NBOPE journeyman certificate requires four years in a state-registered, accredited apprenticeship or 8,000 hours of documented plumbing experience, and Board-accepted training such as an apprenticeship certificate can stand in for up to 3 of the 4 years of experience an NSCB contractor qualifier needs.

Where to start

Start from the Labor Commissioner's published registered-program list, then apply to the sponsors: Local 525 JATC in Las Vegas, Local 350 JATC in Sparks, PHCC of Nevada, or ABC Nevada's plumber program in Reno β€” and ask each how it trains plumbers and what its intake requires.

Who offers plumbing apprenticeships in Nevada?

Plumbing apprenticeships in Nevada are run by sponsors β€” union JATCs and merit-shop chapters β€” and the programs our research confirmed are registered programs.

Nevada is a State Apprenticeship Agency state: registered programs are registered either by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Apprenticeship or by a recognized State Apprenticeship Agency acting for DOL, and in Nevada that agency is the Nevada State Apprenticeship Council, within the Office of the Labor Commissioner.

On the Labor Commissioner's published program list, the plumbing-side sponsors our research confirmed include Plumbers Local 525 JATC (Las Vegas), Plumbers Local 350 JATC (Sparks), PHCC of Nevada (Clark County) and the ABC Nevada Chapter (a plumber apprenticeship in Reno).

We did not compile every registered program in the state β€” the Labor Commissioner's published list (ours is dated May 26, 2026) and apprenticeship.gov are the places to check.

β€œThe State Apprenticeship Council was established to administer the apprenticeship laws and regulations of the State of Nevada.”

Do Nevada plumbing apprentices need to register or hold a license?

Two different registrations come up, and they are not the same.

The apprenticeship itself is the registration: a program registers with a recognized State Apprenticeship Agency or, where none exists, DOL's Office of Apprenticeship β€” in Nevada, the Nevada State Apprenticeship Council β€” so ask your sponsor who registered its program.

A trade license is separate: Nevada has no state-issued journeyman or master plumber licence, and our research found no state requirement for plumbing apprentices to register with a licensing board β€” an absence inferred from our research rather than documented, so confirm with the Council.

What exists is local.

Clark County requires everyone working the craft of plumbing to carry an ID issued through the Nevada Board of Plumbing Examiners, and journeyman is the minimum level for working without supervision; NBOPE is an industry-founded board, created in 2002 by trade organizations, that certifies in partnership with Clark County β€” not a state agency.

Clark County journeyman plumbers may supervise any number of workers but must remain on site while unlicensed or uncertified people are working.

In Reno, plumbing work requires a journeyman certificate, and apprentices must carry a card from an approved apprenticeship program.

β€œThose performing apprentice electrician work or plumbing work in the City of Reno must have a card from an approved apprenticeship program.”

Which union programs and locals train plumbing apprentices in Nevada?

The union programs our research confirmed are the two UA plumbers locals' JATCs.

Plumbers Local 525 JATC in Las Vegas (750 Legion Way) β€” the UA local covering Clark and other southern Nevada counties β€” runs NSAC-registered plumber/pipefitter apprenticeships under program NV001450001, alongside a separate registered HVAC program for refrigeration unit repairer.

Plumbers Local 350 JATC in Sparks (1150 Greg Street) runs registered pipe fitter, plumber and refrigeration unit repairer apprenticeships for northern Nevada under program NV002450004.

Both locals' own websites were unreachable when we researched, so their entry requirements, application windows and start dates were not captured β€” contact the JATC directly, and check the program on the Labor Commissioner's published list before you commit.

Are there merit-shop or employer plumbing programs in Nevada?

Yes for merit shop β€” our research confirmed no employer-sponsored plumbing program.

Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors of Nevada (PHCC, based in Henderson) sponsors a registered plumber apprenticeship (program NV001910003) in Clark County.

The ABC Nevada Chapter runs a registered Plumber apprenticeship in Reno (program NV002950001); the chapter also runs a registered sheet metal apprenticeship in Las Vegas on the HVAC side, which our HVAC apprenticeship page covers.

Whichever program you approach, test it against registration: a program is a registered apprenticeship when the apprenticeship agency has registered it, so ask which agency registered the program, and check the Labor Commissioner's published list and apprenticeship.gov before you sign anything.

Where do Nevada plumbing apprentices get classroom instruction?

πŸ“œ 29 CFR 29.5(b)(4)

Registered apprenticeship pairs on-the-job learning with related technical instruction β€” the classroom side.

DOL recommends a minimum of 144 hours of related instruction per year of apprenticeship; that is a recommendation, not a federal requirement, and each program's registered standards set what it actually asks, with terms that may be time-based (at least 2,000 hours of on-the-job learning), competency-based or a hybrid.

Our research did not name the Nevada schools, colleges or training centers that provide the classroom hours for these plumbing programs β€” ask each sponsor where its apprentices take class and how the hours are documented before you sign.

Where the hours do map onto credentials in Nevada: NBOPE journeyman certification counts four years in a state-registered, accredited apprenticeship or 8,000 hours of documented plumbing experience, and training at an accredited college or university β€” or Board-accepted training such as apprenticeship certificates β€” can satisfy up to 3 of the 4 full years of experience a Nevada contractor qualifier needs within the last 15 years.

How do you apply for a plumbing apprenticeship in Nevada?

Choose your route first.

Union means the JATCs: Plumbers Local 525 at 750 Legion Way in Las Vegas for southern Nevada, or Plumbers Local 350 at 1150 Greg Street in Sparks for the north.

Merit shop means PHCC of Nevada in Henderson or the ABC Nevada Chapter's plumber program in Reno.

Apply directly to the sponsor, and confirm the program's registration on the Labor Commissioner's published list first.

Federal floors set the basics: a registered apprentice must be at least 16 years old unless a higher minimum age is fixed by law, and there is no federal maximum age.

Sponsors can add their own entry requirements on top, and the minimum ages, deadlines and fees for these programs were not captured in our research β€” ask each one.

If you are accepted, expect a probationary period no longer than 25 percent of the program length or 1 year, whichever is shorter, a progressively increasing wage schedule with no federally set percentage steps, and a completion certificate from the registration agency at the end.

Our guide to how to get a plumbing apprenticeship walks the application step by step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a license to be a plumbing apprentice in Nevada?

Nevada issues no state journeyman or master plumber licence, and our research found no state requirement for plumbing apprentices to register with a licensing board β€” an absence inferred rather than documented, so check with the State Apprenticeship Council.

The card rules that bind you are local: Clark County requires everyone working the craft of plumbing to carry an ID issued through NBOPE, and in Reno apprentices must carry a card from an approved apprenticeship program.

The registration you will hold is your registration in a registered apprenticeship program.

How long is a plumbing apprenticeship in Nevada?

Each program's registered standards set the length.

Federally, an apprenticeable occupation must require at least 2,000 hours of on-the-job learning, and program terms may be time-based, competency-based or a hybrid.

The milestone our research confirmed in Nevada is the NBOPE journeyman route, which counts four years in a state-registered, accredited apprenticeship β€” or 8,000 hours of documented plumbing experience β€” as qualifying experience.

Our research did not capture Local 525's or Local 350's program lengths, so ask the sponsor you apply to.

Does a Nevada plumbing apprenticeship count toward the journeyman card?

Yes.

NBOPE journeyman certification takes four years in a state-registered, accredited apprenticeship or 8,000 hours of documented plumbing experience.

Apprenticeship training also helps later in the trade: a Nevada contractor qualifier needs 4 full years of journeyman, supervising-employee or contractor experience within the last 15 years, and Board-accepted training such as apprenticeship certificates can cover up to 3 of those 4 years.

Confirm how your hours map with NBOPE and the Nevada State Contractors Board.

How much do plumbing apprentices get paid in Nevada?

Our research did not confirm Nevada-specific apprentice rates.

Federal rules for registered programs require a progressively increasing wage schedule tied to the skill acquired, and the entry wage may not fall below the FLSA minimum wage where it applies; the percentage steps are set by each program's standards, not by federal rule.

Ask each sponsor for its wage schedule, and read our plumbing apprentice pay guide for how apprentice rates work.

What is the NBOPE journeyman exam like?

NBOPE applications and exams are processed by NITC, which must process your application and payment before you can schedule an exam β€” processing takes up to 4 weeks.

The journeyman/master exam is based on the currently adopted Uniform Plumbing Code and has two parts: 50 open-book questions in 2 hours and 100 closed-book sizing questions in 2 hours, with 75% or 113 cumulative points to pass.

Certificates renew every 3 years with no grace period, and recertifications for certificates expiring after January 1, 2019 are to the 2024 Uniform Plumbing Code.
