What HVAC Apprentice Jobs Pay

Bottom 10% of HVAC techs
$40,050
Bottom 25% of HVAC techs
$48,360
Helpers, all repair trades (median)
$39,630

The Bureau of Labor Statistics does not publish an apprentice wage, so the closest benchmarks are the bottom of the pay range for HVAC mechanics and installers and the median for helpers across all repair trades (BLS OEWS May 2025).

Registered apprenticeships must pay on a progressively increasing wage schedule that starts at or above the minimum wage (29 CFR 29.5); each program sets its own steps, so compare the schedule in the posting.

BLS wage figures leave out overtime, which can add to real pay in peak heating and cooling seasons.

How hiring works

How HVAC Contractors Hire Apprentices

About two in three HVAC mechanics and installers work for plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors, so most apprentice openings are with contractors rather than building owners (BLS, 2025).

BLS says HVAC techs typically finish a postsecondary certificate program of six months to two years and then train on the job, while some learn through a multi-year apprenticeship instead.

Anyone who opens a refrigerant circuit needs EPA Section 608 certification, so many contractors expect apprentices to earn it early.

In a registered apprenticeship the probationary period can't be longer than a quarter of the program or one year, whichever is shorter (29 CFR 29.5).

Overview

What Does an HVAC Apprentice Do?

An HVAC apprentice is paid to learn the trade on the job under experienced technicians, usually alongside classroom instruction through a union, contractor-association or employer program.

Apprentices start on the basics (tools, ductwork, parts runs, maintenance calls) and take on diagnostic and install work as their hours build.
