How did we compare these skilled-trades job boards?
We ranked the sites by fit for the broad question โ hiring, or finding work, in the skilled trades โ not by quality.
A site that is right for an electrical contractor can be the wrong one for a plumbing shop, and a career-discovery site is not trying to be a job board at all.
Every fact about another company comes from its own website, checked on the date in the sources list.
Where a site does not publish something, the table says "Not published" rather than guessing.
Numbers a company states about itself are marked self-reported.
HVAC Hires wrote this page and is on the list.
We placed it where it honestly fits: useful for HVAC and plumbing, and not an option at all for most other trades.
Which job boards are built for the skilled trades?
BlueRecruit calls itself "a job platform built for the trades."
Instead of posting an ad and waiting, employers search tradespeople by real-world skills and certifications and reach out directly โ its phrase is "no resumes or job posts required."
It says it covers 170 trades across 18 trade industries, with 125,000+ job seekers and 6,000+ hiring locations (all self-reported).
It is always free for job seekers and small businesses; plans for larger businesses start at $300 a month.
iHireConstruction is iHire's construction board, one of 57 industry-specific talent communities iHire says it runs (self-reported).
Its homepage listed HVAC and plumbing jobs next to titles such as Electrician, Millwright and Heavy Equipment Operator.
Employers buy Job Slots and swap jobs in and out, from $369 a month for one slot on monthly billing, and iHire promotes jobs across its network and partner sites such as Google, Indeed and JobGet.
HVAC Hires is built for two trades only: HVAC and plumbing, across 29 role categories from service techs and installers to journeyman and master plumbers, pipefitters and sprinkler fitters.
If you hire electricians, carpenters, welders outside the pipe trades or general laborers, it is not the board for you.
More on what it covers is on the HVAC Hires fact sheet.
Are general job sites like Indeed, ZipRecruiter and LinkedIn good for hiring tradespeople?
They are the widest nets, and that is a real advantage for trades with few dedicated boards.
Indeed says many jobs can be posted free, subject to its terms, conditions, quality standards and usage limits.
Sponsored Jobs are billed on job seeker interactions like clicks or started applications, on the first of the month or when spending reaches $500.
Our Indeed alternatives page covers the trade-offs for HVAC and plumbing shops.
ZipRecruiter offers new employers a free trial and charges only if you keep the post active afterwards.
It says it sends a post to 100+ job sites and invites qualified candidates to apply (self-reported).
See ZipRecruiter alternatives for other options.
LinkedIn promoted posts are pay-per-click, and you are never charged more than your daily or total budget.
It suits the office side of a trades business โ estimators, project managers, service managers โ more than field roles.
Craigslist charges $10-75 per job posting in the US and parts of Canada, varying by area.
For a small shop hiring locally, a cheap classified ad is a reasonable test.
What does each skilled-trades job board cost employers?
- BlueRecruit: free for small businesses; plans from $300 a month for larger businesses and growing teams.
- iHireConstruction: $369, $450 or $799 a month for 1, 3 or 10 Job Slots on monthly billing, or $316, $405 or $733 a month billed quarterly. Cancel at any time.
- Indeed: free posts for many jobs (with conditions); Sponsored Jobs on a budget you set, billed on interactions.
- ZipRecruiter: free trial for new employers; it does not publish a price on the pages we used.
- HVAC Hires: $199 for a 30-day Standard listing or $399 Featured, one-time, at launch pricing (regular $299 and $499); subscriptions at $899 a month for 10 live listings or $1,749 for 25, arranged by contacting HVAC Hires. See pricing.
- LinkedIn: pay-per-click promoted posts, capped at your budget.
- Craigslist: $10-75 per posting, by area.
These are different purchases: a monthly slot, a click budget and a one-time 30-day listing don't compare line for line.
Match the model to how often you hire.
Which sites are best for tradespeople looking for work?
If you are the one job hunting, the employer-side prices don't matter; what matters is whether the site lists your trade and what it costs you.
- BlueRecruit is always free for job seekers, and you can be found by your skills and certifications rather than a resume.
- Trade Hounds is a free app that says it has over 450,000 tradespeople (self-reported). Its homepage pitches comparing your pay with tradespeople in your area, a supply-house map, showcasing your work and networking.
- SkillPointe is for choosing the career in the first place: take a quiz, explore careers, find training and get financial help, with a focus on careers that don't necessarily require a bachelor's degree. It also has a Find Jobs section.
- HVAC Hires is free to browse and apply with no account, for HVAC and plumbing jobs only: start with HVAC technician jobs or plumber jobs.
Is HVAC Hires a good fit for electricians, carpenters or other trades?
No. HVAC Hires lists HVAC and plumbing work only.
For electricians, carpenters, millwrights or equipment operators, a multi-trade platform such as BlueRecruit or iHireConstruction, or a general site such as Indeed, is the better fit.
Where it does fit is a contractor hiring HVAC techs, installers, apprentices, plumbers or pipe-trade roles who wants a listing seen by people browsing those trades.
Candidates click Apply and go straight to your own application link.
HVAC Hires is not a staffing agency: it does not screen candidates and does not guarantee a hire.
If that is your shop, you can post a job in a few minutes.
